Maghull Ramblers Coach to Church Stretton: Sunday
15 August 2010.
Coach leaves Central
Square Maghull at 8:15 pm via M57, Runcorn Bridge and M56 to Chester
services (toilet stop at about 8:55). Continues via M56, M53 and
A55 to A483 then via Ruabon and Oswestry for A5 to Shrewsbury
by-pass. The final leg is via A49 to Longnor (A party alights at
about 10:25); B4370 to All Stretton (B party alights at about
10:35); Church Stretton (C party and any non-walkers alight at about
10:40) and Little Stretton (D party alights at about 10:50).
A Party: Shropshire Hills – Ian White and Dave
Schumacher.
10.8 miles; Hard/Strenuous; 2600 ft. of
climbing.
This is a grand tour of most of the Shropshire
Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to the east of
Church Stretton, visiting The Lawley, Little Caradoc, Caer
Caradoc (the highest at 1506’), Willstone Hill and Hope Bowdler
Hill. No high peaks here but a succession of fairly steep ups
and downs. Back in Church Stretton at about 4:45 pm.
B Party:
The Long Mynd – Bill Morley. 10 miles;
Hard; 1650 ft. of climbing.
The Long Mynd literally means the
long mountain. It is a ridge to the west of Church Stetton with a
total length of seven miles and some steep-sided valleys. Our walk
takes us up one of these steep valleys to The Port Way, along the
ridge to the highest point, Pole Bank (1693’) then down another
steep valley to reach Little Stretton, arriving back at the coach at
about 4:45 pm.
C Party: Hope Bowdler and All Stretton – Cath
Pearson and Lynda Barton.
8.5 miles; Moderate; 1025 ft. of climbing.
This is a pleasant circular walk in the rolling
countryside to the east of Church Stretton, climbing out of the
town to reach the Chelmick valley then on to the village of Hope
Bowdler in the Apedale valley with its surrounding hills. The
church of St Andrews dates back to medieval times. The walk
then skirts Hazler Hill and passes through All Stretton before
returning to the coach at about 4 pm.
D Party:
Minton and Hazler Hill – Geff Williams.
6.8 miles; Easy: 650 ft. of climbing.
This walk starts in the attractive
village of Little Stretton with its thatched church
looking across the valley to Ragleth Hill. The walk goes to the
main road at Queensbatch Mill then on to Oakwood and a path known as
the Jack Mytton Way before descending from Hazler Hill into Church
Stretton, arriving back at about 3:45 pm. [‘Mad Jack’ Mytton was a
rich eccentric who lived in this area in the Regency period. He was
a keen horseman and a renowned drinker who could put away six
bottles of port in a day!]
There are plenty of pubs, tearooms and shops in
Church Stretton plus an extensive antiques centre on Sandford
Avenue, near the station. Those who are not walking may wish to
take the Shropshire Hills Shuttle minibus (you can use your
pass) which leaves Beaumont Road (off Sandford Avenue) at 11:13;
1:13 and 2:13 for a two hour tour of the Stiperstones and The
Long Mynd. Coach leaves Church Stretton at 5:45, back in
Maghull about 8:15 pm.
Next Coach: Sunday 12 September to Seatoller and Keswick.
Book with Lauren Keller on or after Thursday 2 September.
